چکیده

We present an approach for the calculation of spin density distributions for molecules that require very large active spaces for a qualitatively correct description of their electronic structure. Our approach is based on the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm to calculate the spin density matrix elements as a basic quantity for the spatially resolved spin density distribution. The spin density matrix elements are directly determined from the second-quantized elementary operators optimized by the DMRG algorithm. As an analytic convergence criterion for the spin density distribution, we employ our recently developed sampling-reconstruction scheme [J. Chem. Phys.2011, 134, 224101] to build an accurate complete-active-space configuration-interaction (CASCI) wave function from the optimized matrix product states. The spin density matrix elements can then also be determined as an expectation value employing the reconstructed wave function expansion. Furthermore, the explicit reconstruction of a CASCI-type wave function provides insight into chemically interesting features of the molecule under study such as the distribution of α and β electrons in terms of Slater determinants, CI coefficients, and natural orbitals. The methodology is applied to an iron nitrosyl complex which we have identified as a challenging system for standard approaches [J. Chem. Theory Comput.2011, 7, 2740].

Two-Dimensional Spin-Polarized Hydrogen at Zero Temperature

The ground-state properties of spin polarized hydrogen H↓ in two dimensions (2D) are obtained by means of diffusion Monte Carlo calculations. Using the most accurate to date ab initio H↓–H↓ interatomic potential we have studied hydrogen gas phase, from the very dilute regime until densities above its freezing point. For very low densities, the equation of state of the gas can be described in te...

An EPR and ab initio Study of a Phosphaalkene Radical Anion, and Comparison with other Phosphorus-Containing Radical Ions

Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) is an efficient method to obtain information about the spin densities in organic radicals containing a heteroatom and, when used in conjonction with ab initio calculations, this spectroscopy can yield a precise description of the structure of these species. In the present study, our purpose is to compare the spin delocalization on the following three parama...

Ab initio simulation of magnetic tunnel junctions.

In this paper, we present the mathematical and implementation details of an ab initio method for calculating spin-polarized quantum transport properties of atomic scale spintronic devices under external bias potential. The method is based on carrying out density functional theory (DFT) within the Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism to calculate the self-consistent spin den...

Collision-induced spin exchange of alkali-metal atoms with He: An ab initio study

We present a rigorous quantum study of spin-exchange transitions in collisions of the alkali-metal atoms with He in the presence of an external magnetic field. Using accurate ab initio interaction potentials, we obtain refined estimates for the Fermi contact interaction constants for complexes of Na, K, and Rb atoms with He. Ab initio calculations show that the Fermi contact interaction in Li-H...

The Spin–Spin Coupling Constants in Ethane, Methanol and Methylamine: A Comparison of DFT, MCSCF and CCSD Results

The spin–spin coupling constants in ethane, methylamine, and methanol have been calculated using density-functional theory (DFT), coupled-cluster singlesand-doubles (CCSD) theory, and multiconfigurational self-consistent field (MCSCF) theory so as to benchmark the performance of DFT against high-level ab initio methods and experimental data. For each molecule, the Karplus curve has been evaluat...
